The Haunting of Fogley Manor

When ghosts appear you can expect Morgan and Jack not to be too far behind.

For their next Gaslamp Case, the Victorian duo of Morgan and Jack, following the conclusion of their investigation into the appearance of the Loch Ness monster, hear rumours of a haunted manor.  Never the ones to ignore such tales, the detectives set out to visit Ravenbrook and check out the truth behind what is happening at the so-called Haunting of Fogley Manor.  It has to be said that part of the reason for the couple's plan to investigate was the fact that the owner of Fogley Manor was Arthur Greystone, an influential politician.

With a choice of Timed or Relaxed playing mode, this Match 3 game is spread over five chapters that each contain a series of levels as you lead the detective duo through various stages of their investigation.  Using the familiar standard layout, the Match 3 grid is sandwiched between available power-ups on the left and the level challenge to be met on the right.  The usual method of creating groups of similar tiles by swapping two adjacent tiles is used.  The group then disappears with the resulting space being occupied by other tiles falling downwards and possibly causing a cascading effect.

Most tiles can be removed by this method but there is one exception.  Referred to as an artefact and easily recognisable by its glowing hue, this tile can not form part of a group.  Instead you have to create a pathway beneath it so that the artefacts descends to the bottom of the grid can be removed.  An artefact tile will always be included as part of the level challenge if included in the grid.

While this Match 3 offering could never be accused of being over-generous with regards to its available power-ups, it does provide a method of generating additional power-ups.  By creating a group of five or more tiles, you will be rewarded with a bomb located within the grid.  This bomb, if used correctly, can be manipulated into position before being exploded to cause the most damage.

Stars are awarded for the completion of each level's challenge.  These stars can be stored up and used to pay for the four upgrades that make up each chapter.  After each upgrade has been made, it will be followed by a cut-scene.  This will involve two static characters having a text based conversation which advances the story line and sometimes features a ghostly figure.  It is through these cut-scenes that you learn some of the history concerting Professor Percival Lancaster and his wife Vivian who died in mysterious circumstances plus a mention of nuclear power.

Offering to present you with a mixture of science, spirits and suspense, the game features a number of grid layouts that I had not encountered in other e-Funsoft titles.  You can download this title from Gamehouse.com where it is priced at $9.99 or from Big Fish Games priced at £7.28.  The game requires a 1.5 GHz processor with 1024MB of RAM and 219MB of hard disk space running Windows 7 and later.
